Kayaking in Greenland
Kayaking in Greenland
The southern Greenland fjord system is perfect for kayaks. The inland ice that pours out everywhere makes paddling between icebergs, reindeer and mountains a first-class experience. Along the way we gather and capture much of the food and we will gain insight to which plants that are edible. After a few days we forget the everyday life back home and a new day presents itself by being in the wilderness on its own terms.
The destination for this trip is the fantastic glaciers, and where they meet the sea. Several of the places we stay the night on the way are ideal for fishing and trekking along the icecap. There is plenty of opportunity to admire this colourful fauna and animal life, and the guide shows how to move in the wilderness. Raising the adventure level and meals to a higher standart duing a kayak expeditions, the weight of the gear can be reduced a lot by gathering and capture the fresh ingredients given to us by nature.
A kayak expedition in Greenland is not only for experts, by ajusting the daily distances, using our expedition equipment and experienced guides most kayakers are able join us. The conditions for participation are EPP2 or similar. The distances can vary according to the wind, and the water temperature remains at around 6 degrees Celsius. Itinerary
8 day kayak expedition
Heritage-wise, we are in the country of Eric the Red, that around 1,000 years ago was home to 3,000 Nordic inhabitants. 500 years later they disappeared, and their whereabouts are still a mystery. One theory is that they emigrated due to climate changes, but whatever the reason, their ruins can still be seen all over southern Greenland.
Day 1.
Aircraft/helicopter from Copenhagen to Narsaq. The group gathers on arrival at Narsaq, where we prepare for the trip and stay the night in a youth hostel.
Days 2-3.
The entire route stretches through deserted wilderness, and we won't meet civilisation again before we get to the tour's end. From Narsaq we set our course northwards, between islands and waterfalls towards the glaciers. The trip is memorable for the blue and white icebergs, that constantly emit with ear-splitting groans. We paddle in through Qaleraliq fjord to its glacier that has three tongues and is nearly 10 km wide. This area is home to a lot of ice floes, hidden lakes in the tundra and reindeer licking salt from the fjord. We take it easy through this part to make time for excursions. After a few days, our everyday life back home will become a distant memory, and a new life begins as we live in the wilderness on its own terms.
Days 4-6.
After we have left Qualeraliq, we will continue through a labyrinth of islands and bays. Our kayaks allow us the privilege of discovery in these untouched areas. We supplement our provisions with locally caught fish and gather mushrooms and berries. There will be plenty of opportunity to marvel at the vibrant colours of the Arctic flora and fauna.
Days 7-9.
On the way back to Narsaq the ice can begin to close in, and it may take a little longer to find our way through the ice masses, with the huge local seal population staying in the area. When we get to camp, we will have a hot drink, and after having pitched our tents, we will relax and let the day’s impressions sink in.
Day 10.
Flight back to Copenhagen.
