Kayaking in Lapland
Kayaking in Lapland
Kayaking or canoing in the last wilderness of Lapland
The trip takes place in the wild and scenery mountain world. Far away from civilisation you can find these crystal clear Arctic mountain lakes, among the awesome mountains and waterfalls. Roaring rapids and waterfalls with extreme forces have shaped the landscape for millions of years. The route requires good shape and expedition equipment, and at the same time it is the most spectacular and deserted trip to be made in the entire Scandinavia.
The expedition combining kayak, canoeing and trekking with a wilderness expedition is a huge experience. We have been operating in the Samick wilderness since 1981, and a kayak expedition north of the polar circle is not only for experts. By ajusting the daily distances, using our expedition equipment and a experienced guide most people are able join to us. Redusing the weight and volume of the gear, gaining a higher standard of adventure level and meals, the guide shows how to capture, gather and use all the fresh ingredients provided by nature. In the rivers we find the finest drinking water and the population of arctic char, trout and grayling is very high. Together we cook over an open fire, creating delicious meals, under the arctic sky.

Practical information:
No experience of the wilderness is needed but you do need to be in normal, good shape for the trip. To some people this trip will be an experience for life but for others it might be slightly over the top. If it rains we will get wet, and in the Arctic climate the wind conditions on the large lakes can quickly change. Precautions must be made, and there might be days where we will need to stay at the campsite, meaning that we must paddle far on other days. Subject to changes in the program – force majeure. The trip is made on the terms of the wilderness and as comfortable and flexible as possible. We are known for autentic wilderness trips and expeditions.
Accommodation:
At the campsite we stay the night in expedition tents. 8 nights in the wilderness and one night in cabin the last day with sauna and dinner on the last evening.
Catering:
The food in the wilderness is included. We cook together in the open using dried ingredients that we brought with us, and which we supplement with gathered berries, herbs and mushrooms as well as fresh fish.
Equipment:
The weather in the area of Pite river in Lapland can vary a lot. Although the weather is usually splendid in summer, it is not unusual for it to change from heat wave to cold and wet weather in just a matter of hours. It is important to bring clothes for any occasion. Please do not bring too much, your personal equipment should fit into a 35-40 litre backpack. Instead bring some soap to wash socks and t-shirts from day to day. When signing up we send the information pack with advice for the wilderness and a list of equipment for the trip. We recommend that you read this material thoroughly.
Luggage:
Your other luggage can be stored in Lapland while we are gone. If you wish, you can bring a smaller backpack/bag to keep it in. Note that we cannot take responsibility for your luggage.
Personal expenses, money and currency:
You must cover meals and other personal expenses on the return trip to Lapland. Do not expect to be able to use credit cards but instead bring cash in Swedish and Norwegian currency.

Day 1-2. Travel to Lapland
We recommend going by train, through the Swedish wilderness all the way to Lapland. Flights are also avalible.
Day 3.
We meet on the northern side of the border where we drive together into the mountains. We go through the gear, pack the kayaks and continue paddling passed Låmivatnet with a short carriage for 300 meters to Eidevatnet. Here in the middle of the mountain world with Arctic flower in strong colours, clear waters, and snowy mountain peaks we set up camp. Under the Arctic sky, the fresh ingredients we cook over the open fire are the ideal accompaniment to our fish, and in river we have the finest drinking water. There is midnight sun and in the bright nights the moose and other animals come down the mountains to drink, meanwhile the fish find insects in the surface. After the day's experience it is very refreshing with a swim in the clear cool waters, enjoying a warm cup and a delicious meal by the campfire.
Day 4-6.
We carry down the Norwegian-Swedish border to Pieskejaura - a kayak trailer can be used on most of the route. In the mountains on the northern side of the azure lake are the glaciers. On the route down to Miekak we will explore the area with short hikes to viewpoints. Along the way we gather and capture some of our own food, gaining insight to which plants that are edible. Berries are picked and we fish in the rivers between the lakes. There is plenty of opportunity to admire this colourful Arctic fauna and animal life. During the expedition we have a day on your own for fishing, finding reindeer antlers, photosafari and picking berries for jam on the bread we bake on the campfire in the evening. After a few days you forget the everyday life back home and a new day presents itself by being in the wilderness on its terms.
Day 7-10.
The following days we continue the trip crossing the lakes with some short portages past the roaring rapids and waterfalls. On the route we will explore the area with trekking in the mountains. After the day's experience it is very refreshing with a swim in the clear cool waters. We camp at perfect fishing grounds with spectacular view, here we cook delicious meals over the open fire under the polar sky. At one of the trip’s campsite we smoke fish in a smoking oven that we build from stone. After dinner, the wilderness calls and we hike for photo-safari or fishing. When we return to the campsite we have something warm to drink, and enjoy each other company by the campfire, before we settle down having the day's events in mind.
After 11 days we are still surrounded by the mountains, and we the civilisation at the first gravel road. After about one hour drive we reach the cabins. We can look forward to a warm bath and a hot sauna. In the evening we finish the trip with a delicious dinner and a good night’s sleep.
Day 12-13.
Next morning you bring home the wilderness experience and the reindeer antlers you may have found.
